I have said before that we do not have to be THE best. We just have to be OUR best. That is excellence.

A church plant with 15 people can still be excellent. I was a witness to that just last week when we were in Los Angeles. A church planter that we have supported since his beginning (Bro. AJ Harold–Solid Rock Baptist Tabernacle) is working to train his people to be excellent with what they have. They can’t have the BEST and BIGGEST building in Los Angeles, but they can (and do) make the best of what they have–an old storefront on 54th Street. When they first signed the lease, the grime on the walls was so thick you could scrape it with your fingernail. The walls were only partially drywalled, and the bathroom was completely condemned.

They got right to work—cleaning, painting, cleaning, building, cleaning…you get the idea. The building is beautiful, now. It is excellent. The bathroom has new fixtures, granite counters and bright lights. The sanctuary is a pleasing milk chocolate color. The walls are finished, and a new little nursery is clean with new carpet. Everything is a work in progress, but his people are starting to get it. At first, they’d ask, “Pastor, you know we don’t own this building, right? Why are we doing all this work to it?” Little by little, though, they’re understanding the reasoning. God’s house is important. Pastor AJ is teaching them about excellence—doing the best they can with what they have.

Our choir is not THE best in America, but at this phase in our ministry, I think it is the best it can be right now, don’t you? Your faithful practice and year-by-year consistency has created a testimony of excellence in our music ministry. I’ll take that over a professional choir any day.

Nope. Never. Not even the “cutting edge” churches are cutting edge. They’re just picking up on trends and copying them. They’re not creating them.

The church as an institution was never meant to be hip, chic and cutting edge. It was designed by God to be cross-culturally timeless. Nothing about it is popular, by nature.

We appease people, often, to accommodate the gospel message (w ho doesn’t want the AC on, right?). But luxuries are not “cutting edge” or “popular.” In our culture, they are basically necessities, but do not detract from truth.

Church goes against the normal human nature. Our flesh likes one thing; God’s Spirit prefers the opposite, usually. Since “popular” things are driven by our human desire to appease our flesh, I get really suspicious about anything that’s both Christian and popular.

Not that I want to be UNpopular. No, no. The GOAL is not UN-popularity. The GOAL is non-conformity (Rom. 12:2). If something is popular, the chances are good that it’s not something that’s going to be found in church.

Popular things aren’t bad. Sports, entertainment, board games, activities…I’m into all these things, and that’s okay. They’re popular things; they’re just not things that define a church.

Our MUSIC (it took me a while, but I got on topic in this article) in church is

not necessarily popular, but popularity is not the goal. Everything’s weird about church to a non-church person: corporate prayer, “Amen’s,” offerings, preaching, the Bible…but just because something is weird to the non-church person doesn’t mean we should change it.

Our past two Easter offerings went toward purchasing new hymnals. As the interns were rolling stacks of books into my office, I said, “Forget it! Let’s switch to e-hymnals or words on the screen!”

While the hymnal might be heavy and expensive, I still like the printed physical book for congregational singing.

The hymnal taught me to read music. This is a personal preference, but I learned to read the bass line from my sister who pointed at the note and sang

it in her octave. It clicked! From then on, I could start to figure out the harmonies and the notes on my own.

The score helps people learn new songs. When they have music, they can read rhythms and pitches. Even if they aren’t proficient musicians, most people at least took a few piano lessons or a music theory class in their school days. The MAIN reason we still use a hymnal is for the music score.

It’s a nice collection of church doctrine. With all the songs we sing in one place, it’s nice for all people to see at a glance what we believe. A hymnal is a tangible reminder of a lot of doctrinal truth. When I go to new churches, I page through their songbook to see what their church is like.

They’ve seen the worthlessness of the emotional 7/11 songs (singing 7 words 11 times) and have responded with a reemphasis on truth. To that, I say, “Praise God!” That’s what God always intended.

OLD TESTAMENT TEMPLE MUSIC: LESSONS FOR TODAY

(Friday Church News Notes, May 13, 2016, www.wayoflife.orgfbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143)

David organized the music worship program for the temple (1 Ch. 15:16-28; 16:4-6; 23:1-5; 25:1-31), and he did this by divine revelation (2 Ch.29:25). It is obvious that God loves sacred worship music. These things are an example for the churches (Rom. 15:4). Notice some lessons from these passages.

First, the instruments were harps, psalteries, cymbals (1 Ch. 16:16; 25:1) and horns or trumpets (1 Ch. 15:24). These four instruments are also mentioned in 1 Ch. 15:28 and 2 Ch. 29:25-26. These are not the type of instruments used to create raucous music with a dance rhythm. Notice that there were no drums.

Second, the singers and musicians were skillful (“to excel,” 1 Ch. 15:21; “skilful,” 1 Ch. 15:22; “cunning,” 1 Ch. 25:7).

Third, they were trained (1 Ch. 25:7).

Fourth, they were well organized; they submitted to God’s order and to the authority God had put over them; they were assigned their places (1 Ch. 25:2,6, 8). Compare 1 Co. 12:7; 14:40; Rom. 12:3-8; Heb. 13:17.

Fifth, they sang and played with enthusiasm and joy (1 Ch. 15:16). God’s people should follow this example in the churches, and the music leaders should teach and encourage it. I believe that congregational singing is a reflection of a church’s spiritual character. Many of the Lord’s people do not sing or sing so softly that no one can hear them, but the song service is not about me and whether or not I feel like singing or like to sing, and it’s not a

time to be entertained. It is about singing to God and edifying one another, and it should be done with exuberance.

Sixth, they prophesied (1 Ch. 25:1, 2, 3). Compare 1 Corinthians 14:24 which says that all the saints should prophesy. This means that every believer participates in and responds to every part of the service from the heart: to the preaching and teaching, the singing, and the corporate prayer. In light of 1 Chronicles 15, the singing and playing of instruments should be done for prophesying, which is defined in 1 Co. 14:3 as speaking “unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.” When visitors see that the members are enthusiastically involved in the services, they understand that the believers really do believe what they say they believe and they are convicted of the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Seventh, they sang God’s Words (1 Ch. 25:5). Compare Colossians 3:16. Worship cannot be heretical or frivolous but must be based solidly upon Scripture.

Eighth, they gave thanksgiving to God (1 Ch. 25:3). This is the first and foremost purpose of the Christian life and church. The churches need to make sure that they sing songs and hymns of worship and thanksgiving and not only songs for the edification of the saints.

Pastor made a point last week about appreciating howour music is portrayed, in that it’s all about God and not about the experience. I still don’t buy into the concept that we are selling people an experience at church. I don’t see that in Scripture.

I try to read things about the composers and what their goals are for the new music that is being produced. I get uneasy about certain popular songs—even when it’s toned down for our church— because the people who say, “Great song, I should look that up” will search YouTube and find the rock version of the song. That makes me uncomfortable.
