Fewer “I Didn’t Know” Conversations
With so many ways to stay connected, I am pleased that there are fewer “I didn’t know about…” comments. We still have a few things fall through the cracks, but, for the most part, we try our best to communicate what’s going on.
And the communication tools are growing, too. We try to communicate several ways:
- Bulletin
- Wednesday sheets
- Sunday school verbal and printed announcements
- Friday email
- Announcement screens
- Social media posts
- Mailings
- Text messages
- Videos
- Resource Desk information
Our least-used system is to announce something during a service, because, ideally, the focus is on the Lord and not an event or activity. I realize that has been a change for some who relied on pulpit announcements to know what was going on, but it is a joy to me when events happen well, and we haven’t said a word about them from the pulpit.
For example, last week, over 20 ladies signed up and attended the ladies get-together. At the same time, piles and piles of donations are rolling in for the yard sale, and people are preparing to host our summer interns. The teens have Comedy Night, Rooted had a volleyball day, the Master Clubs are having their campout, and several other get-togethers are happening organically.
This is good.
I know it’s work—you have to read the announcements for yourself, but that’s good! Connection is a two-way street. When we each focus on others instead of ourselves, we are the ones initiating the conversations, joining ministries, and coming to events. Instead of “no one invited me,” or “I didn’t know,” it is, “Thank the Lord for so many opportunities to connect with others.”
If you can’t find a place to connect, reach out and initiate. Prov. 18:24 “A man that hath friends must show himself friendly…” —Pastor Ryan
