Immanuel means “God with us.” I can’t think of a better one-word summary for what Christmas means than this one name.
Last week, we talked about the incredible POWER of God directed toward us, available through the sacrifice of Jesus. Immanuel. The MIGHTY God. The Almighty.
There’s no power that is not His, and “in Him (Jesus) dwelleth all the fullness of the godhead bodily.”
We sang “O Come, All Ye Faithful” last week, and a line in there jumped out at me—something I had never noticed before: “begotten, not created.” Jesus is God’s only BEGOTTEN son, meaning, he was the only human who was ever born (begotten) AS the Son of God. We can become the sons of God by faith, and we are born again, or begotten by God into his family (see 1 John 3–4). But when we are born into THIS world, we are the born in sin as the enemies of God.
Only Jesus was born as the perfect son of God.
I love the King James Bible for many reasons, but that good old word “begotten” is one of them.
So, let’s come and adore him today. He is WONDERFUL, COUNSELOR, the MIGHTY GOD, the EVERLASTING FATHER, the PRINCE OF PEACE.
Worship him today.
