The Inseparable Body and Soul
I never fully understood the theology of the body until we came through 1 Corinthians 6 a couple of years ago. What we do in our body is inseparable from the condition of our heart.
Although our body, soul, and spirit are separate, the soul and spirit are the inner you, while the body is the outer you. But the “real” you is all of you… not just the inner you.
Meaning, when your body is hungry, you get angry! Or, hangry, as they say. Or when your SOUL is moved, your tears cry. That’s the interconnectedness of the inner and outer you.
When God created Adam’s body, he breathed in him the breath of life, and man became a living soul. When you are sanctified, God wants you to be sanctified WHOLLY—all of you: 1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
So, while last week was all about having a HEART for God first, the Bible never says that we are to ONLY have a heart for God—as if the body does not matter.
It does. We can sin in our soul but also our body. We can reverence God in our soul but also our body.
So how you “adorn” this temple says a lot about what you think about the inside. That is not only about appearance, but your appearance is the first and most apparent way you express your beliefs.
