The Family Table
The showcase piece of furniture in my parents’ house is the 15’ live-edge wood slab family table. Meals are loud at the Rench Ranch with everyone in there, but it’s a good time of fellowship as we sit down together.
The church family in Corinth had some issues to work out, and before sitting down at the Lord’s table for some fellowship with him, they had to purge out some leaven. The Lord’s Supper is so many things:
- OBEDIENCE to his command (“This do…”)
- IDENTIFYING with Jesus
- MEMORIAL of his death (“in remembrance of me”)
- FELLOWSHIP with Jesus (“communion of the blood of Christ”)
- DECLARATION of his sacrifice (“ye do show the Lord’s death”)
- CELEBRATION of his return (“till he come”)
It is all of those things, but it is also a PURIFYING time for the church. Just like the Feast of Unleavened Bread was in conjunction with the Passover, we are searching our lives for any “leaven” of sin to root it out and cast it away. Last Sunday (morning and night) was about repentance from the heart, and tonight, we get to let the Lord’s sacrifice remind us of how we ought to live.
