Choir Note-Sunday, May 26, 2013
It struck me in a way I’d never really considered before… the choir director said, “Orchestras go away from their rehearsals and come back the next week better. Why should choir be different?”
Everyone knows that if you play an instrument, you take the music home and practice all week. That’s what lessons and rehearsals are all about… perfecting what you’ve worked on all week and then learning to improve on it in the rehearsal time.
But with choir—our voices—it’s easy to just… sing, right? I mean, we know the notes, right? Actually… no. You shouldn’t “just sing.” Not if you view your voice like an instrument.
Now, even I don’t “practice what I preach” when it comes to my voice. But I should. J
I don’t expect this note to be earth-shattering for you, because it’s not for me. I just thought it was interesting, and perhaps you’ve never really considered it before.
No matter who you are, how long you’ve been singing or how good or bad a voice you think you have, all of us could take voice lessons and learn something. I am not currently taking any type of music lessons, but I would just as strongly recommend voice lessons for you or your kids as I would instrument lessons. Just a thought.
