The Ministry of Family
Have you ever stopped and thought about your life?
What kind of relationships do you have? What kind of friends do you have? How important is your family to you? How important are your friends?
My ministries here at Calvary Baptist Church include several areas: youth, music, and whatever else.
But what’s my main ministry? Is it youth? I spend most of my time there. Maybe that’s it. Is it music? It’s an essential part of the worship of God each week, and it could be argued that godly music is more important than a youth ministry. Is my main ministry as an associate pastor—trying to support our pastor in all the areas of ministry I can?
Actually, my main ministry is none of those things. Before I’m a youth pastor, before I’m a music director, before I’m a church staff member, God has given me other roles. Or, other ministries, you could say.
My main role is to be a Christian. That’s a given. My relationship with the Lord comes first, but right on the heels of being a godly man I am called to be a godly husband and father.
God ordained the family unit, and it has been around even before the church. That doesn’t necessarily make it more important to God than the church, but it shows us that God’s way is timeless. Family is important to God.
Children are given to parents, not a church. Families are tight little “ministries” in themselves.
You know what my main ministry is now? For the next couple decades, my main ministry will be to lead my family to love the Lord. With Charlotte being born this week, my “ministry” just expanded!
Youth groups come and go. You will come and go. Your friends will come and go. You know what? Your family and my family will always be families. You can’t change that. So, I had absolutely better be sure that I invest in the one place that is closest to me—my family.
