There’s a lot we COULD know as a church, but Scripture shows us what we SHOULD know as a church.
What’s the main thing?
The attacks on Israel by the religious Islamic terrorist organization Hamas (and the rightful counter-attacks by Israel) are horrific—as any deaths by fighting are—but fights in the Middle East are not the main thing.
The government overreach into our American freedoms is a telling indicator that we’ll soon be like Canada or Cambodia—arresting its citizens for noncompliance—but our rights are not the main thing.
As anti-Christ as the new Disney cartoon “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder” is by portraying two gay dads, the culture will not be won by merely disparaging homosexuality. It’s a hot topic to Christians, but it’s not the main thing.
It’s not about Newsom, Biden, Bitcoin, bombs, jobs, the wall, or anything else we can point a finger at.
Have I offended everybody yet? Well, even Tim Tebow is not the main thing! There. Got the last of you.
Pointing at all the sin “out there” is not the main thing. It’s not about the brokenness; it’s about the solution.
The main thing is the GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST—the good news that he came to fix what was broken and heal those who are wounded. How? Through repentance and faith in Christ’s finished work.
The main thing is the how the Gospel works to change people from the inside out. And as people are changed, then families are changed. As families are changed, neighborhoods are changed. As neighborhoods are changed, communities and cities and politics and society at large is changed.
The main thing is the GOSPEL—a grassroots change agent that affects the hearts of men and causes a NEW LIFE to spring up where there was only deadness before. It’s the power of God, according to our sermon text today, and it’s the only way that any kind of good change can happen.
There’s a lot to talk about today, but let’s keep the main thing the main thing. The Gospel.
Who hath saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, but is now made manifest by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 2 Timothy 1:9-10
