Woody Hayes was the head football coach at Ohio State from before I was born, up to 1978, two years after I graduated from Bible College. Before going to Pacific Coast Baptist Bible College, I had attended the University of Arizona in my hometown. College football was the big thing on campus. By that time Woody Hayes was something of a legend already, and Ohio State was often a contender for the national title. But Hayes, especially in the earlier years, disdained to have his team use the forward pass. Of his style of football the reporters said it was, “Three yards and a cloud of dust!” One of these reporters once asked, “Woody why don’t you ever throw the forward pass?” Hayes replied, “Three things can happen when you throw a forward pass…and two of them are bad.” Woody was “playing the percentages” as he saw them. But thanks be unto God you and I don’t have to live our lives by playing the percentages. We have an Unerring Guidebook in the Word of God and an Infallible Guide in the Holy Spirit. That Guide Book will tell you that the Holy Spirit will use it to “guide you into all truth.” It’s a blessing to know that we don’t have to live by guess work and playing the odds. The long shot is a winner when he is committed to knowing and then doing God’s will.
