Wrapping Up Our Series
Last month, we enjoyed several guest preachers, and next week, Bro. Gerhard Theurich will be our final deacon to preach. So, with this little gap week, I wanted to wrap up our series through the book on appearance called Yes, It Matters, by independent Baptist pastor Tom Brennan.
Tonight’s final sermon will be a word study on vanity, and with all this talk of appearance, it truly does come back to the heart.
To review, clothing in the Scripture has moral, practical, aesthetic, and religious purposes. The MORAL use is to cover nakedness, which includes covering much more than the world deems moral. So Christians dress differently than the world, and our dress code for church events reflects what we believe the Scriptures teach for Christians to wear all the time. This rules out shorty-shorts, bikinis, and even plunging necklines, for example.
The PRACTICAL use is things like a raincoat for the rain or work boots for the construction site. The RELIGIOUS use is not for our church age (e.g. specific ceremonial dress for priests), and the AESTHETIC use is for beauty. That’s what we want to talk about tonight.
Dressing nice is fine, but VANITY is not. Two people can wear the same item of clothing and only ONE of them might be vain—it’s back to the heart. Let’s protect against vanity.
