Choir Note- Sunday, July 28, 2013
Let me explain.
Our American culture has a distinct music flavor, especially when compared to other ethnic cultures (think about Asian, Tribal or Island cultural trends).
Within that culture exists an entire culture of spiritual or worship or church or sacred music. It be argued that this “culture” could be further broken down into more distinct categories or cultures such as contemporary, high church, folk, etc.; but for our purposes today we will limit it generally to the all-encompassing term: church music.
Now, at our level we have an entirely unique culture. We have our Calvary Baptist culture of music. As we practice week after week, we (meaning, you), for better or worse, are contributing to the culture of our church’s music.
So which way are we trending? Is the culture of our music ministry to always be excellent, always do our best, always improve, always guard the sanctity, and always be on the watch for anything that would change the culture? Or do we have a culture of just getting by, or no passion, or no improvement, or stagnant, or looking for a change?
From my perspective and in my opinion, by God’s grace, I believe we have a healthy culture in our music ministry at Calvary Baptist Church. The question is, what do you do each week to contribute to that? Being late to church, missing practices without mentioning it, throwing together a special, not looking up in choir—every little thing you do contributes to the culture in some way. People may not notice small details, but people notice a culture. And culture is made up of details. I’m not accusing anyone of this, because praise God, I think we’re doing well. Let’s pray it stays on that same path, and let’s each do our part to keep it that way.
