LAST WEEK’S SERMON

Last Wednesday, we continued our series on studying God’s Word, which starts with US wanting to do something with it. Paul warned Timothy that there would come a time when the people would not want the sound doctrine that he was teaching, but would “heap to themselves teachers…”

We discussed a few practical ways we keep that from happening at our church:

  1. Say “Amen.” The word is a good one, and shows that we, the congregation (not only the preacher) affirm what God’s Word is saying.
  2. Bring Your Bible. Carrying a Bible speaks to what a congregation values and expects.
  3. Stay Awake. I used to work nights. Believe me… I know the struggle of sleepiness! But stay in the struggle.
  4. Sit up. Your posture tells others how interested you are in what’s going on. Be eager to hear God’s Word.
  5. Don’t talk. Again, the congregation’s attitude toward the Word of God shows through everything they do.
  6. Pre-read texts. If you know what’s coming, do your own personal study and anticipate what God wants to say to you through the passage.
  7. Don’t just be a hearer of the Word, but a doer. When the Holy Spirit convicts you to make a change, don’t deceive yourself by ignoring Him. Make a plan and do what God says.                                                                                                                                                                                                           Pastor Ryan
