No, I’m not talking about anyone in this class, particularly not someone who had a birthday last Thursday.
I’m talking about Daniel. J The book of Daniel… not Daniel Solie! These past few weeks have been super weighty material. We will be done with the Daniel series next week… just in time to start a brand new series with our brand new students. God’s timing is amazing! I didn’t even plan it that way. J
Think back to your first week in the youth class. It was a lot different from Mrs. Rench’s class, huh? You went from stories, flannelgraph, candy, Daily Diggings and Jr. Church to preaching, preaching and more preaching!
At first, it’s weird. And boring. After a year in it, though, you get used to it. If you’re growing in the Lord, you actually get to where you, you know, like it. Weird. What kind of weirdos like preaching?! Godly Christians. Godly teens who are excited about hearing from God every week. You, hopefully.
You should come each week expecting to hear from God. I promise you that I will put time into the Sunday school sermon, and I know Pastor puts lots of time into his sermons. Not only is it spiritually mature to stay awake and alert during the preaching, but it’s also respectful. Even if you can’t really understand what’s being preached, at least don’t be disrespectful and fall asleep on the preacher. If anything, he’s put in between 7-15 hours per sermon (my average prep time is about 7-10 hours per week). The least you could do is stay awake.
I realize it’s heavy material, and it’s way different from the Junior class. But it’s time to grow up. Spiritually and physically. It’s time to spiritually mature and choose to discipline your body. Spiritual maturity will be reflected in your passion for preaching. And, if it’s real, it will pass on to the next generation coming up in a couple weeks. Do you contribute or distract from the preaching? You’re doing one or the other. Even when it’s weighty stuff, discipline yourself to pay attention.
