With these new little booklets coming out, reading has been on my mind lately. Are you a reader? You should be. It’s much better for your brains than video games. When I was in high school, I read a bunch of fiction. In college, I moved to non-fiction. Now, most of my reading is non-fiction, and my shelves are full of helpful books. If you ever want to borrow any, please let me know. I’m serious. I hope you become readers. I brought a few samples tonight. Many of my books are written by people who do not believe exactly like us, but they have good points that we can learn from…
Biblical Preaching by Haddon Robinson. It’s good if you’re into preaching and Bible Study. It shaped my thinking on preaching God’s Word, and is a required read at Heartland for the men.
Living By the Book by Howard Hendricks. It’s a book on Bible study written for everyone, not just pastors. It is easy to understand and breaks down Bible study very simply.
My Journey to Biblical Preaching is the story of Bro. Sam Davison’s change from being a hard-nosed preacher to a Bible preacher. He tells the story of learning how to preach God’s Word and how he desires to teach the young men of Heartland to preach.
America in Crimson Red by James Beller. It’s a book on Baptist History in America and details the sacrifices of Baptists to shape what America is today.
The Calvary Road by Roy Hession is a short book that dives deep into spiritual self-examination.
Spiritual Leadership by J. Oswald Sanders has been a “textbook” for leaders for a long time. It is deep and will make you think introspectively. You’ll read it and feel very… small. J That’s good.
Spiritual Leadership… The Interactive Study by Henry and Richard Blackaby is a question/answer type format book on leadership. It examines a lot of Bible and asks compelling questions for the reader to answer.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey is the book that everybody who’s anybody reads. It’s a classic. There’s a teen version that is really good, but this version just takes you a little deeper.
How To Read Better and Faster by Norman Lewis is a book on speed-reading. It has charts that help you not only read faster but also comprehend what you’re reading so you actually get it! It helped me improve my read times by about 30 wpm within a few days of doing the drills.
Just Friends by Cary Schmidt and Mike Ray is a detailed book on relationships. It is an expanded version of my A Case For Dating God’s Way booklet, and it will give you lots of Bible principles on dating.
Seven Royal Laws of Courtship by Pastor Jerry Ross is a booklet that gives several Bible principles on dating.
Stay in the Castle by Pastor Jerry Ross is a story for teen ladies who are waiting for God’s timing in marriage. Mrs. Jamie read this in one of the split classes.
The Teenage Years of Jesus Christ by Pastor Jerry Ross is a Bible study and series of principles from Jesus’ time on earth as a teenager.
The Far Side by Gary Larson. You can borrow my comic books if you’re into them. J
Drawing Cartoons. If you’re into doodling.
Sherlock Jones and the Missing Diamond by Ed Dunlop is a fiction mystery book written for older kids/younger teens. Even though they were written younger, I read all my Ed Dunlop books a couple times each all through high school. They’re entertaining.
Readers are leaders. Leaders are readers. Cool people are readers. Bro. Garrett can’t read. Bro. Garrett’s not cool. (Poor guy. He’s not even here to defend himself!) -Bro. Ryan
