A large part of the Christian life is serving God.
Tonight, you had one more opportunity to serve your King. If you call Him LORD, is He? Does he really rule your life, like a lord rules a kingdom?
God should.
Being the Lord’s “subject” ought to change you.
It ought to make you want everything to be perfect for the King.
I’m a little obsessive about certain things. There are some projects I completely forget about, but others that I go super crazy on. For example, Lexi, today, came to work in the music closet. It drives me crazy that it’s not perfect. I need every song in those drawers to be in number order. I need to know exactly how many sheets of music we have for each song. I need to know the composer, arranger and publisher of every song. I need to know everything! So, Lexi was in there all afternoon sorting those songs, putting them in numerical order and reporting on how many are missing.
Another example is a project I worked on this past week—researching new hymnals. Since ours are out of print, we need a hymnal with all our current favorite hymns and one that includes orchestration. So, I gathered up all our songbooks (the hymnal, our “Favorites” gray songbook, the Ironwood book), sorted through the songlists in the back and then printed the NEW hymnals’ songlists. Then, I went through every single song title to see if OUR hymns were in the NEW hymnal, and wrote down the song titles that were missing. Finally, we compared the new hymnals to each other to see which ones had the most and the best songs.
It was kind of a crazy project. I mean, most normal people would have kind of just looked at the new hymnals and figured, “Yep. This one has 900 songs in it. I bet it is a good one!”
I guess I could have done that, too. But, like I said, I’m a bit obsessive about certain projects, and this was one of them.
I try to do that on purpose, though. I want to be thorough in my service to my King. I want to make sure we’re using our finances wisely. I want to make sure we’re making the right and the best choice of hymnals. If our song service is so essential to our worship of God, then I want to have thought through as many of the small details as possible.
I love my King. I want things to be perfect for Him.
Do you serve Him out of a deep respect and love? Do you get obsessive about serving Him?
Don’t get sloppy with ushering, singing, or greeting. Serve the King well by getting a little bit obsessive. I’m sure others will understand.
