Dad’s Devotion
Some men take fatherhood as just
something that happens when they
have been part of a relationship from
which a child was born. They take little
responsibility for the child, and less for
the mother of the child. Such a man
is “technically” a father, but not one in
reality. There is a lot to being a father
in the best sense of the word. No father
can be all he should be without a serious commitment and
surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ. That surrender is what puts
him on track to being all the other things a father needs to be,
from provider and protector, to guide and leader in his home
and family.
Over the years I have seen men who have put their devotion to
family or to their children above their devotion to the Lord. That
never turns out like they think it will. Our children don’t need
to sense that we are devoted to them as much as they need to
see that we are devoted to our Saviour.
Too many children grow up with a dad that seems more
devoted to his own ambitions and desires than to the Lord or
the family. Thankfully though, those children can still do well as
they respond to the Word of God and the work of the Spirit of
God in their own lives. Think how much more they would gain
though, if the principles they receive from their exposure to the
Word were reinforced by the example of a father who was living
a life committed to Christ. Such a dad will find his greatest joy
in seeing the fruit of that.
3 John 1:4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children
walk in truth.
