In our topical series on Wednesday evenings I’ve been dealing with the subject of pride and humility. We looked last week at what the Bible has to say about humility, and saw that there are three avenues to humility. One is voluntary, and that is, “humble thyself.” One is involuntary, and that is when God must humble a person, or even a nation. “He that exalteth himself shall be abased.”
A third avenue to humility found in Scripture, is by a process whereby God teaches us to respond biblically to circumstances. One of the purposes God stated that He had with Israel during their wilderness wanderings, was, “to humble thee and to prove thee…” This Wednesday evening the message will deal with the “spirit of humility” that Christians need to develop.
In his comments on a book on Humility written by C.J. Mahaney, Pastor Mark Dever wrote: “C.J. Mahaney is not humble. At least, that’s what he’ll tell you. And that’s one reason he is so well qualified to write this book. I’ve read it. I’ve seen humility in his life-and in the lives of those he’s taught. If you’re fighting pride-like I am- you should read this book. And if you’re not fighting pride, you really need to read it!”
Fighting our old nature pride is an ongoing battle isn’t it!
